He has been hurt in the past badly....?

and I am, without any guilt or fault of my own,paying the consequences, of him caring for me but trying to put himself first,wanting to have the upper hand in the relationship,and trust me Ive dealt with a few things that would make some of you go '' girl,dont put up with that '' because of him being hurt,for example, he would ignore me in public just to put on a strong face when in reality I know he cares a lot, etc.. I have been hurt very badly in the past,yet I still treat him ok and dont take it out on him, how I make him realize that he is making me pay for her mistakes? it makes me sad because I give him attention, Im gentle, caring, I wouldnt hurt him,and he is throwing everything I can give, away,just to prove to himself that he is Mr. Poker face.
